Want to explore the beauty of Lanai in a wholly unique way? Just sign up for a trip with Maui Ocean Riders Adventure Tours. Their half and full day trips let you go on a gritty oceanside adventure to remember. A favorite of search and rescue crews, their watercraft is none other than a ridge-hull inflatable H.B.I, which lets you glide along right in the middle of all the action. They only take up to 18 passengers on each tour, making it a wholly intimate affair.

To go on a tour, you must book your spot online or by giving them a call. After that, you just have to show up at Mala Wharf in Lahaina at the designated date and time. Captain Chad will meet you by the boat with granola bars and refreshments to go over what to expect. Furry first mate, Bogey, will do his best to not steal the spotlight, but it’s hard to ignore such a cute seafaring dog.

As you board the watercraft, you’ll learn about all the safety considerations, like where to find the life jackets and other gear. Then, you can grab a seat upfront or in the rear underneath the shade canopy. While the watercraft is in motion, it’s best to stay seated. You can still move around if needed, just be sure to move carefully to retain your steady footing. As you cruise along to Lanai, the captain will provide interesting facts and point out all the amazing sights along the way.

On the full-day trip, you’ll head along the north shores of Lanai first before crossing the AuAu Channel. Then, you’ll continue around the coastline to all the top snorkeling spots nearby. The captain will stop the boat at various points to let everyone get in the water and look around. You can snorkel to your heart’s content before loading back up to continue the journey. Most trips have at least three snorkeling stops, depending on the conditions. Plus, you get to land on the beach and check out all the shore has to offer.

About halfway through the day, you’ll stop for a cold lunch. Sandwiches are usually on order, allowing you to refuel for more fun without getting bogged down by too much good food. Feeling thirsty? In addition to your breakfast and lunch beverages, you’re free to ask for more drinks whenever you want.

You’ll then continue around the island in search of more snorkeling adventures. Each time you get into the water, you have a chance to see dolphins, monk seals, sharks, and so much more. Colorful tropical fish often swim by in big schools plus there’s usually at least one pufferfish flitting by.

The half-day trip only takes you on about 1/3 of the journey, but there’s still opportunities to snorkel and enjoy the views. On that tour, you’ll mostly stay along the western and southern shores instead of going all the way around. The captain will use his knowledge of the ocean waters to decide where to take you for the day.

Whether you’re going on the half or full day trip, be sure to apply reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen before you arrive. Bring extra sunblock to apply every two hours after that, plus wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Don’t forget your sunhat and towel as well along with a light jacket in case it gets chilly.

Insider Tips:
-Arriving by private car? Look for the free parking on either side of Mala Wharf Road. Avoid parking in the stalls designed for use by trucks and trailers.
-Their tours sell out months in advance, so book your spot as soon as you know you’ll be on the island.
-Since you’ll ride close to the surface, there’s a lower risk of seasickness. If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s still wise to use an over-the-counter medication an hour before arriving.
