Looking to do some angling during your Maui vacation? If you’re traveling with your family or a group of friends, booking a fishing charter is the way to go–and Maui Fun Charters is a powerful contender. Maui Fun Charters consistently reaps 5-star reviews for professionalism, fun, and successful fishing, and visitors agree they’re a great match for brand-new and experienced anglers alike.
Maui Fun owns three vessels: the Marjorie Ann and the Pamela, both fishing boats, and the Mele Makani, a Catalina 42 MKII (a sailboat). All offer plenty of shade, comfortable seating, state-of-the-art electronics, and ample space to enjoy the tour (groups of 4-5 if taking a fishing charter, or 7-8 when booking a private charter).
Some of Maui Fun’s charter options include:
Bottom Fishing Charters
The most common type of charter booked by Maui Fun is the 4-hour Bottom Fishing Charter. These charters leave the harbor at 7 a.m., troll out to excellent fishing spots at a depth of 300-400′, then head back to arrive back at the marina by 11:30 a.m. Although you aren’t guaranteed to catch fish, 9/10 tour groups do–including more than enough to take home for dinner, if desired.
For the most part, bottom fishing tours yield smaller fish that are favorites to put on the traditional Hawaii family’s dinner table: snapper, triggerfish, trevally, ahi, and Hawaiian hogfish. But sometimes larger trophy fish are caught while trolling on the way to and from deeper fishing waters! If you catch a trophy, the crew can direct you to a taxidermist or fish print expert so you can take your prize catch back home.
Tours are family-friendly, and the crew will happily help kids bait their hooks (or bait the hooks for them) and successfully cast them into the water. Because Maui Fun takes only small groups out, the environment is always cozy enough for everyone to get the help they need. Bottom fishing tours also typically head out into very calm waters, as well, so it’s not as challenging a ride for kids or those who are prone to get seasick.
Private Charters
If you’re more interested in whale watching or booking a private sightseeing charter, Maui Fun can handle those requests, as well. Some visitors have booked private charters for snorkeling, whale watching, or sightseeing tours. Give them a call to find out what your options are–and what the availability looks like for your trip.
Sailing Charters
Maui Fun Charters owns one sailboat: the Mele Makani, an awesome option for snorkeling or sightseeing tours. The Mele Makani has been booked for proposals, birthday outings, ash spreadings, fishing trips, and first sailing outings. You’re sure to snag Instagram-perfect photos and memories that will last a lifetime.
Location
Maui Fun Charters operates out of the Maalaea Harbor in Wailuku, Maui. It’s a two-minute walk from the Maui Ocean Center and just minutes from the restaurants and parks of Wailuku. Give yourself about 20 minutes of driving time to reach the harbor if you’re coming from Kahului.
Insider Tip:
If you’re planning your trip during the busy season (that is, the summer months when most kids are out of school), charters tend to fill up quickly–so book your charter well in advance, ideally at least 2-3 weeks before your desired dates. During the off-season or if your schedule is more flexible, 1-2 weeks in advance should be more than adequate.
