Kamalani Playground has a Yelp and Facebook page because it is so famous!
Visitors describe the playground as looking like a castle from Harry Potter. It is on the eastern side of Kauai, south of Kapaa in Lydgate Park, and is open year-round from sunup to sundown.
The Kamalani Playground opened in October 1994. Despite the structure’s age, it is in fantastic condition and safe for children of all ages.
The sign greeting you at the entrance of Kamalani Playground says, “Conceived by the children and built by the people of Kauai.” The massive all-wood playground is a child’s playground heaven! The main structure is a labyrinth of towers to climb, tire walks to cross, bridges to defend, and openings to explore or used to escape!
The only artificial materials at Kamalani Playground are a plastic slide tube, tires that form a bridge, and the chains and seats for the swing set. Everything else blends in naturally with the ironwood trees that dot the landscape.
Adorning the playground is colorful keiki art that further enhances your child’s experience. The word “keiki” is Hawaiian for “child” or “the little one.” Not only will your children love the playtime, but they can marvel at the artwork crafted by artisans their age.
Kamalani Playground is the perfect getaway for families. Admission is free, Lydgate beach is nearby, and shaded picnic tables are close. A wooden fence encloses certain areas of the playground. Mom and dad can relax at a nearby picnic table while watching their toddler explore.

Kamalani Playground is very safe but getting a splinter from the wooden structure is a possibility. Sometimes algae may grow on the decking, making footing slippery.
