Rascal Charters targets four major types of game fish. If you’ve ever wanted to catch mahi-mahi, ono, ahi, or marlin, the Captain and crew will show you not only where to go, but what to do when you find these popular fish. Founded in 1989 by Kevin Hogan, the business has built an impeccable reputation on the island. Hogan was known not just for his business sense, but for his generosity, honesty, and sincere goodwill. Today, everyone at Rascal is carrying on his legacy by treating guests as they would their own family.

Specializing in Trolling
Trolling is a fishing method that moves fishing lines through the water to cover more ground. This is different from trawling, which uses a net instead of a line. At Rascal Charters, the staff specializes in trolling, though they will sometimes switch up their approach based on the conditions of the water. The goal is to make them bait by any means necessary, which may mean using live bait, dead bait, etc.

Rascal Charters is known for going the extra mile when it comes to finding and baiting the fish. Every trip is dependent upon the conditions of the ocean, so you may have some slow moments on your tour. The good news is that you’ll be able to explore the waters dozens of miles off-shore and thousands of feet deep.

What You’ll Find in the Water
Your catches may include Pacific Blue, striped, and spearfish (AKA short-billed) marlin, yellowfish tuna, dorado, or wahoo. Sometimes, you’ll see snappers, skipjacks, or other types of fish, though this is less common than the 4 major types of fish.

The Rascal is a quiet boat with twin inboard diesel engines and a cruising speed of around 28 miles per hour. The 43 ft. Bertram Sportfisher will troll at around 9 miles per hour and does have both sunny and shaded areas with seating. If you want to see the view of the ocean from atop, check out the seats at the front of the flybridge. When you’re on the boat, you’ll have all the gear you’ll need.

Private Expeditions
All fishing expeditions are private affairs, and you can choose from a 4-hour, 6-hour, or 8-hour tour. The crew is partially motivated to take guests out for an experience they’ll never forget, but they’re also motivated (in part) by the ability to sell their catch in local markets. However, the priority is always the guests, so they’re happy to filet the fish and put it on ice for any guests staying on the island.

All tours start with a short introduction, and beginners are more than welcome. Everyone will get their chance to try out different techniques, so they can experience the hands-on aspect of fishing. The staff is very kid-friendly, just don’t be surprised if some of their enthusiasm for fishing rubs off on the little ones.

Rascal Charters is undoubtedly known for their commitment to the island, particularly when it comes to showing its customers what lies beneath. If you’ve ever wanted to travel farther on the water and find some of the most hidden game fish in the world, this is the tour for you.
