Whether you want to stick to the land or take a dip in the water, you’re going to love Maalaea Beach. Located along North Kihei Road, this chill beach doesn’t attract a lot of attention, making it a great place to get away from it all. Despite that, it has a little something for everyone along its shores.
If you want to keep your feet firmly on the ground, you can stroll along the sandy shores or hit the boardwalk nearby. Otherwise, you’re welcome to enjoy all your favorite waterside activities, like paddleboarding, snorkeling, and everything in between. Just be forewarned that there are no lifeguards on duty at any time. So, if you get into a bit of trouble, you’re definitely on your own.
No matter how you spend your time here, take a moment to sit on the sand and look across the oceanside. The open view of Maalaea Bay allows you to admire the beauty all around without anything impeding your gaze. To your right, you’ll see McGregor Point with its lighthouse standing on the edge. And on the left, it’s just miles and miles of brilliant blue water as far as the eye can see. For the best views, arrive just before sunrise or at sunset to watch the sky light up in reds, purples, and pinks.
Top things to do:
Take a Stroll on the Sandy Shores
At just over six miles end to end, this beach is perfect for a long leisurely stroll. As you walk along, you have the chance to find stunning seashells, rocks, and other treasures. Although you can admire them all throughout your visit, be sure to leave your finds behind when you leave. Want to add your own personal touch? Create a beautiful beachside mandala and let the tide wash it all away later.
Walk Along the Kealia Coastal Boardwalk
If you’d like an easier walk without compromising on the spectacular views, hop on over to the nearby Kealia Coastal Boardwalk. Located behind the beach right along North Kihei Road, this paved path takes you on a trip through a small wildlife refuge. Seabirds are a common sight, of course, along with tons of gorgeous wetland vegetation all around.
Enjoy the View of the Lighthouse
For a glimpse of the stunning McGregor Point and Lighthouse, direct your gaze to the west. Built in the early 1900s, this lighthouse has proudly guided ships away from shore for over 100 years. The pyramid-shaped tower is a true sight to behold all on its own, although it’s the flashing green light 72 feet above sea level that does the heavy lifting.
Watch the Sea Turtles from a Distance
Since this beach doesn’t get all that many visitors, you can often see sea turtles resting on the shore. More often than not, the turtles make their way to the beach at sunset, and then leave again at sunrise. So, plan your trip during those magical hours to watch these creatures get a move on while the sky lights up in vivid hues.
Look at the Sea Life from the Outcroppings
The rocky outcroppings along the beach serve as a great vantage point for watching sea life all around. Colorful fish, octopuses, stingrays, and so much more usually hang out around the tide pools next to the rocks. Just be sure to watch your footing as you climb up to see the creatures because the rocks are usually quite slippery.
If you come to the beach during the winter, find a nice place to sit and set your sights on the water beyond. Whales often swim along the shore and even breach the surface from time to time. You’ll have to keep close watch though or risk missing out on the sightings. Despite their enormous size, these spectacular creatures move rather quickly and disappear out of sight before you know it.
Insider Tips:
-Want to see all the creatures up close? Bring a pair of binoculars, so you can give them space while marveling at their magnificence.
-There’s some parking available at Maalea Park and Ride down the road: here.
-Can’t find any parking? Plan to park along the road or at the lot near the end of the boardwalk. Never leave any valuables in your car, not even in your trunk, or you’ll risk having your vehicle broken into while you’re away.
