There are many ways to take in Kauai’s amazing scenery, but few are as simultaneously thrilling and awe-inspiring as ziplining. While several courses can be found throughout the Hawaiian islands, there is something truly special about the eco-adventures at Shaka Zipline Kauai.
At Shaka Zipline Kauai, dramatic mountain scenery forms the ultimate backdrop for sky-high adventures. The far-reaching vistas are truly a sight to behold, and the native plantlike of Kauai is fully on display. Highlights include the Uluhe fern in the valley and the Kukui, which is Hawaii’s state tree.
Shaka excursions always begin with a simple and convenient check-in at the Poipu Shopping Village. This is followed by a short drive to the actual ziplining area, complete with friendly conversation and plenty of anticipation. The drive itself is lovely, but the real visual treat begins as you embark on the ultimate zipline adventure.
Multiple zipline tours are available, including options that incorporate five or eight lines. The former will be the preferred option for most first-time zipliners, who also benefit from patient guidance every step of the way. Safety is clearly a priority, as evidenced by the course’s accreditation with the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT). Regular audits ensure that the course is in excellent shape.
Shaka’s emphasis on safety extends to all interactions with knowledgeable staff members. They provide plenty of insight into what visitors can do to make the experience as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible. Cheering is to be expected and, by the end of the tours, both the guides and the participants feel like old friends.
The guides get on wonderfully with the many preteens and teens who take part in the zipline excitement. The minimum age is 10, so, unfortunately, many families will need to sit this particular experience out. That being said, this can be a great option for accommodating older kids or adolescents who are otherwise difficult to please.
Experienced zipliners should find enough to keep entertained, although this might not be the most exciting experience that hardcore thrill-seekers have ever sought. Speeds of up to 50 miles per hour can be expected along the way, plus drops of about 200 feet. The eight-line tour is vastly preferable for intermediate and advanced zipliners, who will feel as if the five-line alternative ends too quickly.
Regardless of the speed, the views alone take this a step above most zipline tours — and the camaraderie from the guides doesn’t hurt. Throughout the tour, you can expect to learn about the island and get a real education from people who know what they’re talking about.
There are few better ways to witness the remarkable beauty of Kauai than by zipline. When you want an educational element to your adventure, opt for Shaka Zipline Kauai. You will thank yourself for discovering Kauai from a whole new vantage point.
Insider Tips:
-Pack light, as Shaka Zipline does not provide anywhere to store personal items such as purses or backpacks. Small items can be kept in zippered bags, however. These are then secured to the harness.
-If you want to capture the best of the ziplining experience, consider renting one of the GoPro cameras offered by Shaka Zipline. You are also welcome to bring your own GoPro or other camera but will want to confirm that it is securely strapped to you or stored in one of the pouches provided by Shaka.
-Ziplining typically happens rain or shine, so be prepared to embark even if the weather seems less than ideal. That being said, Shaka Zipline will cancel if the weather is bad enough and will make an effort to either refund or reschedule your zipline tour.
