After a fun-filled day on Poipu Beach on Kauai, stroll over to the outdoor Honu Bar for cold drinks, savory food, and picturesque ocean views. The Honu Bar is beside the pool of the Marriott Hotel, and the atmosphere is casual. There is seating around the bar and an abundance of tables with umbrellas closer to the beach. Honu Bar is popular with locals who come to grab a cold one after a day of surfing. Vacationers frequent Honu Bar to watch sunsets and relax near the beach. When the sun sets, tiki torches illuminate the festivities that continue into the night. Because it’s popular, the Honu Bar can be crowded and noisy.
Customers had mixed reviews about the quality of their meals and drinks at the Honu Bar. Most agreed that the prices were steep, even during happy hours. We’ll look into some complaints when we check out some menu and drink options. With that all said, we feel you should visit to decide for yourself. If nothing else, enjoy the one feature all customers agreed upon: the beautiful ocean views.
If you’re the penny-pinching type, we suggest visiting the Honu Bar during one of its two happy hours. They have specials on Mai Tai’s, tropical drinks, and draft beers. Although the menu varies, the past fare has included Kalua pork nachos, onion rings, and garlic Parmesan fries.
Let’s check out some drinks and meals offered at Honu Bar.
Tai Chi
This mixed drink is what one diner described as “a Mai Tai on steroids.” In other words, if you’re looking for a stiff drink, this is the one!
Fish Tacos
These Hawaiian-style tacos come with grilled mahi-mahi, cabbage, pineapple salsa, avocado creme, shredded cheese, and tortilla chips. Diners commented that, if anything, the meals at Honu Bar are inconsistent. One customer said that the fish tacos were terrific on the first night but stringy the following day.
Burgers
Burgers are a staple of bar cuisine. The burgers at Honu Bar received positive feedback. They offer a bacon and cheddar burger with the option of adding BBQ Kalua pork for an additional cost. The Bikini Burger is a vegetarian burger featuring a taro patty and other veggie delights.
Pineapple Boat (salad)
Hawaii is known for pineapple, so it’s no wonder Honu Bar offers a pineapple salad. The salad is served in a large tortilla shell (the “boat”) and has pineapple, honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberry, lychee, papaya, grapes, and yogurt.
Despite the mixed reviews, we feel the Honu Bar is worth a visit. It’s the perfect place to relax with family and friends and sip tropical drinks. The Honu Bar is also the place to be to watch sunsets, surfers, and whales.
Insider Tip:
Taco, tacos, tacos! Tuesday at Honu Bar is Taco Tuesday. You have one trip to the taco bar to build two tacos. And be sure to check out “Breakfast on the Beach” Saturday and Sunday.
