Hideaways Pizza Pub

Hideaways Pizza Pub - Real Hawaiian Pizza with New School Flair
Local Expert's Rating:
4 / 5
The Bottom Line:

Although the building and decor are a bit out of date, the food is impeccable and makes you want to come back for seconds (and thirds). Thankfully, Hideaways isn't true to its namesake, and you can find it easily when visiting the island. Come for the pizzas, but stay for the salads.

If you were to order a Hawaiian pizza, you would get a pie covered with Canadian bacon and pineapple chunks. If you thought it was weird that Hawaiian pizza would have Canadian bacon, it’s because the dish was invented in Canada in 1962 by, of all people, a Greek immigrant.

Regardless of its origin, Hawaiian pizza has become a mainstay on many pizzeria menus, including at Hideaways Pizza Pub on Kauai. In this case, however, all of the pizzas here are “Hawaiian” since the place is in the state. However, Hideaways’ actual Hawaiian pizza is a local favorite, topping many customer’s “best of” lists.

The pub divides its pizza selection into two groups: “old school” and “new school.” In the former category, you’ll find classic favorites like cheese, pepperoni, sausage, supreme, and the eponymous Hawaiian pie.

In the “new school” category, you can try some more gourmet options like:

Bianco Pizza – Bianco is a traditional white sauce made with olive oil and basil. This pizza comes with ricotta, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese for a decadent cheese lover’s experience.

Garden Island – Awaken your taste buds with this healthy concoction that blends pesto, artichoke hearts, bell peppers, kalamata olives, goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, and spinach. Your stomach will also appreciate the healthiness of this pizza.

Sauteed Spinach and Pear – The name says it all, and this pie comes with goat cheese, parmesan, and roasted garlic.

For those with gluten intolerance, Hideaways offers its 10 and 14-inch crusts in gluten-free versions. Also, while Hideaways is naturally known for its pizza, the pub serves some incredible salads. So, if you’re looking for a light meal, you can try one of these decadent dishes:

Cranberry and Pear Salad – Complete with crumbled walnuts, baby spinach, and local honey.

Seared Tofu Salad – This mix comes with quinoa, Tuscan kale, and an apple cider vinaigrette.

Roasted Beet and Mandarin Orange – The dressing on this salad is exquisite as it blends pomegranate and acai berry for a lightly sweet flavor.

Finally, since Hideaways is a pub, feel free to imbibe during your stay. The place has a complete draft menu and classic cocktails like the Mai Tai and Old-School Manhattan. This is definitely an excellent place to drink and feast with friends.

Insider Tips:
-This place is kind of small, and it does fill up pretty fast. Some days, the staff can keep up with orders, but other days, they may be struggling. Some reviewers have reported slow service and dirty tables, but they seem to be the exception, not the rule.
-During mosquito season, bugs can get inside, so you might have to ward off various pests. However, for most of the year, the place is clean and mosquito-free.
